Summer is easily my favorite makeup season, not only because I get tan, but because bright colored lipsticks roll into trend, year after year. Bright lip colors accentuate tans incredibly well and are a great way to play around with your look! However, I am still a college girl, although I’m living in the big apple and living corporate life, so even though I’d love to splurge big time on YSL lipsticks and Nars lip pencils, I am still on a budget. Because of this, I prefer drugstore lipsticks, as some of them are actually of fantastic quality, because they aren’t products I would use every day (a la foundations, concealer etc.) and I may not even like! So ladies, here are my top three bright colored lipsticks from the drugstore!
First up is a bright orange, Revlon Moon Drops Lipstick in 710 Orange Flip. This creme formulation provides lips with both moisture and highly pigmented color that is the perfect orange, not too red not too crazy orange like MAC Morange. Lipsticks from this line tend to have an old-lady smell, however I kind of like it, and once it’s on your lips you don’t really notice it. I also love the bright green packaging – it’s more fun than the classic black and makes it so much easier to find this lipstick amongst the random debris in the bottom of your handbag.
In the middle is Rimmel Lasting Finish Lipstick in 90, a bright warm pink. I find that many bright pinks lean cooler and bluer, and while this does make your teeth extra pearly white, they look a little odd on my super yellow complexion. This is why I love this lipstick, besides the fact that it was created by Kate Moss, it’s still definitely pink, while still warm enough to look good on me! Not crazy about the packaging though. It feels like rather cheap plastic and definitely doesn’t feel as expensive as Revlon’s, although the “Kate” signature on the cap is cute! I would say the formulation of this lipstick is moisturizing as well, but not quite as much as Revlon’s.
Last but not least is Covergirl Lip Perfection in 325 Spellbound. This purpley fuschia is not a shade I would normally go for on my lips, but it’s one of my favorite colors to wear and since I had a dress exactly in this color, I knew it would need a lipstick friend to go along with it. Thus Spellbound was purchased. The shade is a little darker and vampier than a normal bright summer lip, but if you are on the paler side or want to look edgy I’d definitely try out this color.
What I love about all three of these lipsticks is that they are both long-lasting, and non-drying. All of them stain the lips pretty strongly once applied, yet are easily removed with makeup remover, so they last a long time. When applying them, I normally lay down the first layer carefully, then blot into a tissue. Then, I add another layer and blot, then add a final swipe before walking out the door. With this method the lips won’t fade and aren’t dry either! Drugstore lipsticks normally go for around $8, which isn’t exactly dirt cheap, but compared to $30 designer lipsticks, or even $15 MAC lipsticks, $8 seems pretty darn cheap.
